The April 8 screening will include a question-and-answer session with the filmmaker, who will be on campus for the event.

The Dr. BettyLou Koffel ’74 Film Series returns to Keuka College with the screening of “Grrrl Justice” on Tuesday, April 8, at 6 p.m. in the Hawkins Lounge.

Written and directed by Shontina Vernon, “Grrrl Justice” follow three young women who are navigating challenging chapters in their lives. The brief film explores how traumatic backgrounds including family violence, racism, poverty, sexual abuse, homophobia, and transphobia attach young people to systems that criminalize them, rather than alleviate the impacts of systemic oppression in their lives.

Immediately following the screening, there will be an in-person Q&A with filmmaker Vernon, who is a longtime advocate of arts access as both prevention and alternative to incarceration. She created “Grrrl Justice” as part of a Right of Return Fellowship, which invests in formerly incarcerated artists to help them create original works that further criminal justice reform.

The Film Series was launched in 2022 by Keuka College alumna Dr. BettyLou Koffel ’74 and her husband, Philip Moyer, to provide programming aimed at promoting engagement around issues of community and belonging on campus.
